Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between contemporary and lyrical?
Lyrical grows out of jazz and ballet and follows a song's lyrics closely, while contemporary is a broader, more experimental style that includes floorwork, improvisation and modern technique.
Does my child need ballet before contemporary?
A ballet or jazz foundation is helpful and recommended, but motivated beginners are welcome. Contemporary and ballet complement each other beautifully.
Is contemporary used in competition?
Yes — it's one of the most impactful competitive styles and a core part of our American Youth Dance Company repertoire.
